Risk mitigation and training – government infrastructure department

Situation: A large and diverse government department was facing multiple existing and potential technical risks, a multitude of risk sources, lack of accountability and resources for managing and mitigating risks.

Actions: Adarna Consulting visited key stakeholders; identified the risks, their causes and impacts; and established mitigation options.

Outcomes: An Improvement Guide was developed to identify and manage risks in the
future, relevant tools were established, internal team members trained and overall risk exposure reduced.

Business Resilience and Recovery Program – large mining corporation

Situation: A large coal mining organisation was required to maintain a large range of plans including disaster management plans, emergency response plans, business continuity plans, principal hazard management plans and asset reinstatement plans. The plans were not easily accessible, contained contradicting duplications and required reference to multiple different plans for any one event (costing precious time and increasing impacts).

Actions: Adarna Consulting visited key stakeholders, reviewed and identified comprehensive risks and undertook business impact analyses for individual mine sites. All related plans were reviewed and documented into a single business resilience and recovery manual. The new manual ensures that all incidents and crises can be managed in an efficient and effective manner and achieve legislative compliance.

Outcomes: A comprehensive manual documenting plans for business resilience, emergency response, business continuity and disaster recovery was developed. Supporting tools and diagrams were incorporated and the organisation has met its audit and legislative requirements. The manual is easier to work with and more readily accessible and the format can be transferred from one site to another.

“Unmanaged crises can lead to public relations fiascos and legal problems that can disrupt the normal functioning of any organisation or business. Would your business survive being shut down for weeks, months or even a year?”

Risk Management Framework – health / not for profit organisation

Situation: A complex health organisation was required to establish and maintain a system of internal control and risk management. Major change had left the organisation exposed to risks which threatened its overall reputation and sustainability.

Actions: Adarna Consulting identified and documented a framework for managing all risks, conducted internal training to create internal skills transfer, established responsibilities for key team members and outlined responses to potential crises.

Outcomes: A tailored Risk Management Framework has been established, risks have been mitigated and opportunities have been maximised for the organisation. Supporting tools have been established and the organisation has now met its legislative requirements as well as improved its professionalism and efficiency.

Pandemic planning and response – child care centre

Situation: In mid 2009, Pandemic Influenza (H1N1) was swiftly moving into Australia. At a group of child care centres, sick children were being brought to the centre exposing other children and health care workers to the virus.

Actions: Adarna Consulting reviewed existing policies, developed pandemic awareness materials and facilitated information sessions for parents and staff.

Outcomes: Staff and parents became more aware of the risks, high risk cases were identified, sick children were kept at home and the centres remained open during the pandemic. Financial losses were minimised along with the spread of the illness throughout the centres.
